How did you get started at CrossFit Themis?

I went through the basic class and joined Themis in January 2015. I had just gone through the Ideal protein diet and lost 25 lbs.  I was looking for a way to keep the weight off but still be able to eat and drink whatever I wanted. Sounds unrealistic doesn’t it! My co-worker kept talking about this gym he had joined in Rib Mountain where you can do CrossFit and how the workouts were both strength and aerobic workouts. The workouts were done in groups and the WOD was already planned for you. Sounds awesome, as the biggest part of going to the gym is trying to plan on what am I going to do today. Aerobic exercise was usually not on the list as doing 4 sets of bench press seemed satisfying and good enough. Two and a half years later I am addicted. My goal is at least three times a week. I am a 5:30 am WOD’er, is that a word?  Most think it’s insane to workout at that time, but then it’s done and I don’t have to worry about interfering with work or family time. No one seems to care where I am at 5:30 am. Knock on wood I have been able to keep the weight off and still eat or drink whatever I want.

Is there a workout or skill that you hope to master this year?

Double-unders and muscle ups!

2 ½ years and I still can’t do double-unders. Some make it look so easy but my hands and feet cannot seem to handle one going at twice the speed of the other.

Bar muscle ups are another thing that I want to be able to do in 2017. I am close but just can’t quite get the on top that bar. I know it’s all in the kip and the technique.

I am in the master’s division. Being able to do these more advanced skills will separate you from the other Masters when doing the OPEN.

What’s one piece of CrossFit gear you can’t live without?

Hands down it has to be fellow CrossFitters and the coaches. I could have the best world class CrossFit gym in my basement and like most home exercise equipment it would go un used.

If it was not for my fellow CrossFitters and coaches I would not get out of bed in the am to workout. There are many mornings I lay there at 5 am thinking of excuses as to why I should not go. After wrestling with sleeping in or going………. I go because I know the morning regulars will be there and if they are up and doing it, so can I.

Many of the workouts if I were doing these WODS on my own I would quit ½ way through. That’s good enough would be the attitude, but when you have the coaches cheering you on and you look around the gym and see your fellow CrossFitters hammering it out you must keep pushing yourself! It’s great to have fellow athletes to feel the suck with and afterwards feel GREAT about what you accomplished!

If I could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal?

Man, this is a hard question!  Well after tossing this question around all weekend and pretty much coming to the conclusion that I am a jack of all trades but master of none.

Unsure if trying to be a great husband and father is an Olympic event.  I could not even imagine not being a contestant as the experience is so rewarding!

Depending on the day, hour, minute I am sure there are times I am not even close to the podium or even making it to the final heat of the event, but I sure love competing!

The event began 24 great years ago as I am the husband to my best friend and lovely wife Kathi and we have raised two beautiful teenage daughters, Alex and Kristina.

This is a lifelong event as you continuously work at it, but hopefully in the end I will be a GOLD medalist!
